When it comes to turning your primary bedroom into an oasis of relaxation, a statement wall DIY can make all the difference. Whether you’re looking to add a splash of personality or create a cozy retreat, a statement wall sets the tone for your space. At Dunhill Homes, we recently transformed one of our Cornerstone Series primary bedrooms with a showstopping statement wall—and now, we’re sharing all the tips and tricks to help you do the same in your home.
For our project, we used sleek wall trim in a geometric pattern and painted it in Sherwin-Williams’ “Iron Ore,” a stunning deep charcoal with a hint of warmth. The result? A modern, yet inviting, focal point that perfectly frames the bed. Here’s how you can recreate this look:
What You’ll Need:
- Wall trim or molding of your choice
- Saw and miter box (for precise cuts)
- Measuring tape and level
- Adhesive or nails (depending on your wall surface)
- Sandpaper
- Paint (we used Sherwin-Williams’ Iron Ore, but feel free to choose a color that fits your style)
- Paintbrushes and rollers
- Painter’s tape
Step 1: Plan Your Design
First, decide on the geometric pattern you’d like to create on your statement wall. Do you want clean vertical lines, a grid, or something more intricate? Sketch out your design and measure your wall to determine how much trim you’ll need. At our model, we opted for a modern, symmetrical pattern that draws the eye to the bed.
Step 2: Prep Your Wall
Before installing the trim, make sure your wall is clean and smooth. Sand down any imperfections and apply painter’s tape to protect adjacent surfaces.
Step 3: Cut and Install the Trim
Use your saw and miter box to cut the trim to size. Be precise with your measurements to ensure a seamless look. Attach the trim to the wall using adhesive or nails, making sure to use a level to keep everything straight.
Step 4: Paint the Wall
Once the trim is securely in place, it’s time to paint. Start with a primer if needed, then apply your chosen color. We love how Sherwin-Williams’ Iron Ore adds depth and drama to the space while maintaining a sophisticated vibe. Use a small brush to carefully paint around the trim, and a roller for the larger areas.
Step 5: Style Your Space
After the paint has dried, style your primary bedroom to complement your new statement wall. Layer plush bedding, add ambient lighting, and incorporate textures like velvet or linen for a relaxing retreat. In our design, we paired the bold wall with soft neutral tones and metallic accents for a balanced look.
With just a weekend of work, you can create a statement wall that turns your primary bedroom into a haven of comfort and style. Ready to try it out? Be sure to share your finished project and tag us on social media using #DunhillDIY. We can’t wait to see your take on this stunning design trend!
