A Stylish Vertical Feature with a Soft, Sophisticated Twist

Want to elevate your space with texture and color without overpowering the room? A painted DIY slat wall accent might be your perfect weekend project. Sleek, modern, and endlessly customizable, slat walls add architectural detail and a dose of design personality.
In our Tuscan Estates model home, we transformed a simple wall into a focal point using evenly spaced vertical wood slats — finished in a soft olive green for a subtle pop that still feels neutral and calming.
🛠 What You’ll Need:
- Wood slats or MDF trim (cut to your wall height)
- Wood glue and/or brad nails
- Sandpaper or sanding block
- Measuring tape, level, and pencil
- Paint in your color of choice (we used a soft olive green)
- Caulk or wood filler for touch-ups
🔨 How We Did It:
1. Prepped the Wall
We chose a cozy corner between two bedrooms and measured the space carefully, marking where each slat would go for consistent spacing and clean lines.
2. Installed the Slats
Using wood glue and brad nails, we adhered the slats vertically to the wall, checking each one with a level as we went to ensure a uniform finish.
3. Painted It Olive Green
Once the slats were installed, we painted the entire wall — slats included — in a calming olive green shade. It gave the wall depth, warmth, and a fresh, earthy feel that pairs beautifully with wood tones and natural light.
4. Finished the Edges
We caulked any small gaps and touched up the paint for a flawless finish.
🎨 Why Olive Works:
Olive green is having a moment — and for good reason. It’s warm without being bold, stylish without being trendy, and pairs beautifully with neutrals, wood finishes, and natural textures.
🏡 Why We Love It:
- Adds instant texture and visual interest
- Feels upscale but still homey
- Doubles as wall art in cozy spaces
- Budget-friendly and beginner approved
